UVA lamps should be replaced approximately every 5,000 operating hours, or at least once a year. Even though a lamp may still glow, its ultraviolet output fades over time - so an old tube attracts far fewer insects despite looking like it still works. A sleeved UVA lamp has a protective coating that contains the glass and phosphor if the tube is ever broken, preventing contamination of food and surrounding surfaces.
